Evangelism is the act of publicly preaching the Gospel with the intention of spreading the message and teachings of Jesus Christ. This is not a modern day term, it is a commandment.
He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” Mark 16:15 (NIV).
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV)
While He was on earth, Jesus commissioned His disciples to go and preach the gospel.
And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease. Matthew 10:1(NKJV).
As disciples of Jesus Christ, we have the same commandment and even more, the Holy Spirit to help us fulfil our mandate. When Jesus breathed on His disciples in John 20:22, He empowered them to effectively preach the gospel. We see the demonstration of this in Acts of the Apostles chapter 2 where Peter, who was fearful and uneducated preached and 5,000 men (besides women and children) became believers in Jesus Christ, in one day!
While some Christians specialize in the area of evangelism and are called evangelists, the assignment to preach the gospel to all the world is every believer’s responsibility. First Haitian Baptist Church follows in the footsteps of our Master, and we regularly do outreaches that have a dual purpose; to help the oppressed, and to make Jesus known.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. Romans 1:16 (NKJV).
